Cowslips…

… at dusk, when I go out to shut the chickies in, this lovely patch of cowslips in our garden just seem to shine…

They are a real joy.

Happy new year?

… or should that be “new year and a quarter”?  Hey ho – back to blogging now its spring.

I have been gardening like a demon – and loving it – even though my body is complaining.  Today I extended the chicken run behind the greenhouse…

The view from greenhouse…

… the grass won’t last long but they are having a lot of fun.

Those are beans in the foreground and a few peas in the pots at the back – more pop up every day – its like magic.

Happy days…

And back to the garden…

… not that I have been away from it of course…

My greenhouse is looking splendidly verdant – the tomatoes are growing well, especially the cherry tomatoes I have in a hanging basket.

The peppers are looking good and finally the chillies are looking less pathetic.  And of course the strawberries – absolute giants some of them and very sweet.  I am trying to propagate them already by putting the runners into pots of compost – I think thats what you are supposed to do… we’ll see…

The peas – I had my first meal tonight with my own peas – such a delight!

First pickings...

First pickings…

AND – there were 9 peas in some of the pods – which I think is “proper” (well, according to the judge on Allotment Challenge anyway 🙂 )

The sugar snap peas are doing well (and taste great) – but some of those plants are definitely “ordinary” peas – some sort of mix up I guess.

AND – cucumbers!  I bought 3 tiny plants of different varieties not realising how BIG they get.  They are looking absolutely splendid and all three plants have lots of tiny cucumbers on them.  Any idea what to do with cucumbers? – apart from adding to salads… its looking like I might get rather a lot…

Happy days…

Growing ginger…

Just look at this…

Growing slowly...

Growing slowly…

My sister Angie gave me this little beauty for Christmas – she had noticed a little bud on a root of ginger and decided to plant it.  It started to shoot and she gave it to me (to see if I could keep it alive haha!)  Anyway – as you can see, even after nearly 3 months – it is doing remarkably well… AND there is one new shoot and the promise of a couple more…  Isn’t this fun?

To give you an idea of the scale, the pot is 3″ across and the piece of ginger root is just 2″.

I wonder what it will look like once leaves begin to form (if I can keep it alive that long!)  Its currently on my bathroom windowsill where it gets some morning sun and its above the heated towel rail so its quite warm.  I am hardly watering – just a drop of water by the growing bud – the rest is dry and sandy…  obviously I have NO idea whether this is correct treatment but so far so good – time will tell…

Happy days…
