A new obsession…

Receently I needed a fairly mindless sort of project and making these coiled rope bowls were just the thing…

A bowl of apricots...

A bowl of apricots…

The first one I made was just with plain rope.  It is made by using the zigzag stitch on the sewing machine and just coiling the rope round and round until the base is about the right size… then lifting the base and continuing to stitch and coil at an angle – thus making the sides.  I love the plain one!

Then I played with wrapping the rope with fabric strips as I sewed the coils together.  This was huge fun because the fabric patterns break up and have a surprising effect as you wrap and coil…

Three more bowls...

Three more bowls…

I am not sure how practical they are… I am using 100% cotton rope and cotton fabric so they are probably washable although I haven’t tried that yet.  And, really, just how many bowls can you use???  I see these becoming Christmas/birthday presents for family and friends – makes a change from hand knitted socks 🙂

I think it would be fun to dye the rope before coiling – and even dye or paint the completed bowls.  I think I may try to make a bag next.  I think I would make an oval base and just keep coiling up the sides and make spaces for the handles when it looks big enough – all trial and error and great fun.

I also want to try making bowls by sewing the coils by hand – with pretty yarns maybe – and sewing by hand would mean I could manipulate the shapes more easily as I wouldn’t be constricted by the sewing machine… I could make square shapes with straight sides – like boxes…

Happy days…

  1. I have a book on this but couldn’t source the rope without a second mortgage. There were forty-thieves-pot shaped ones with lids that caught my eye (I never was one for starting small)

    • Hi Caroline – the pot shaped vessels do look fantastic – not sure I feel up to the challenge of making one of those just yet! As for sourcing the rope – I got mine from amazon £1.89 for 15m x 9mm – but I guess if you are going to make one of the Ali Baba type baskets you may need a few packs 🙂 Cheers, Helen
